Betty Joe Merritt, née Griffin, born October 15, 1934, peacefully left this world to be with her Savior in the early hours of May 10, 2026. A devoted Christian throughout her life, Betty exemplified faith, compassion, strength, and love in every role she embraced. She was a cherished wife, loving mother, dedicated teacher, and faithful servant to her family, church, and community.
Betty taught for more than thirty years, most of that time at Spalding County Junior High Unit I, where she inspired countless students through her work teaching CVAE and English. Teaching was far more than a profession to her; it was her calling and mission. Her desire to help others extended beyond the classroom into her church life, where she faithfully taught various Sunday School classes over the years, sharing both wisdom and encouragement with generations of fellow believers and students.
Betty was known for her compassionate heart and unwavering devotion to family. She lovingly cared for her mother and husband for many years, demonstrating remarkable patience, sacrifice, and kindness. She was also an avid reader whose curiosity and love of learning remained with her throughout her life. Those who knew her admired not only her intelligence, but also her quiet strength and resilience through life’s many seasons.
Adventure was also woven into Betty’s spirit. In 1969, with courage and determination, she moved to Alaska with her husband and three children, where the family lived for four memorable years. Later in life, after retirement, she and her husband embraced a love of travel, living in an RV revisiting favorite locales and exploring new places together. Betty approached life with both bravery and wonder, always willing to step into the unknown with faith and determination.
Betty Joe Merritt leaves behind a legacy of faith, service, education, compassion, and adventure that will continue to live on in the hearts of all who loved her. She will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and joyfully reunited with those waiting for her in eternal life.
