Bill Barisoff

May 3, 2026 Milan, Quebec Dignity Memorial

Bill Barisoff, 80, of Winlaw, B.C., passed away peacefully on May 3, 2026, at Campbell River Hospital after a long journey with advanced Alzheimer’s disease. Bill was born in Nelson, B.C., the fourth child of Mabel and Alex Barisoff. At a young age, his life took a difficult and life-altering turn when he was taken to New Denver at just five years old. Though he might have flourished under the gentle guidance and teachings of his family and community, Bill instead endured the hardships of residential school—an experience that left lasting emotional and physical impacts throughout his life. Despite these challenges, a profound and enduring gift emerged: the deep, lifelong friendships he formed with others who shared those difficult years. Together, they supported one another through pain, resilience, and healing. As a young man, Bill was industrious and determined, building a life with his own hands. He contributed to the shaping of communities through work on dams, roads, and power line routes, and eventually built his own home. Known for his skill and resourcefulness, he became someone others could rely on—a true handyman who took pride in helping wherever he could. Bill had a deep love of socializing and dancing. He spent many joyful times on the dance floor, first twirling with his wife Marion, and later with Margaret. He delighted in finding the best dances—especially those that came with a good meal and great company at a rock bottom price. His sense of fun and connection brought people together in many aspects of life. For 51 years, Bill showed immense courage and strength through his commitment to recovery. He dedicated many years to sobriety and became an active and valued member of the Alcoholics Anonymous community, offering encouragement, understanding, and hope to others walking a similar path. An adventurer at heart, Bill loved to travel. He created cherished memories on trips with his sisters’ families, and with friends in destinations including Mexico, Hawaii, California, and Cuba. These journeys reflected his love of connection, exploration, and shared experience. Bill is lovingly remembered by his daughter Natasha, son-in-law Peter, and his cherished grandchildren Matthew and Tyler (Dawson Coates). He also leaves behind many dear friends and extended family whose lives were enriched by his presence. A graveside service will be held at Krestova Cemetery on Saturday, June 27th at noon, followed by a luncheon at Crescent Valley Hall. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the caring staff at Campbell River Hospital for their compassion, and to Dr. Piek for her steadfast advocacy and support during Bill’s final days. Bill’s larger-than-life personality, quick wit, and warm sense of humour will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. He will be deeply missed.
