Lawrence Wesley Day Jr.’s story began on December 14, 1942, in Council Bluffs — a Midwestern town where he first learned the values that would guide him throughout his life: hard work, loyalty, service, and devotion to family. On Saturday, May 9, 2026, at the age of 83, Larry passed away in Cape Coral, just six days after the passing of his beloved wife, Nancy Kay Day, on May 3, 2026. After 60 years of marriage and a lifetime spent side by side, their bond remained unbroken — a love story defined by steadfast devotion, enduring partnership, and unconditional love.
Larry leaves behind a legacy of patriotism, strength, and kindness. He was a true gentleman — effortlessly refined, kindhearted, and dignified. Though his presence was larger than life, there was always a humility and warmth about him that made people feel comfortable, valued, and genuinely loved. He will be deeply missed by the family and friends who cherished him so dearly.
Larry shared an extraordinary 60-year marriage with the love of his life, Nancy. Together, they built a life grounded in unwavering commitment, resilience, laughter, and family. Their home was filled with warmth, tradition, storytelling, and countless treasured memories created through family gatherings, holidays, road trips, and the simple everyday moments that became priceless over time. Through every season of life, Larry and Nancy stood side by side — true partners in every sense of the word.
Above all else, Larry was devoted to his family. He was a proud and loving father to Christopher Day, Steven Day, and Amy Foresman, and a deeply cherished “Papa” to his nine grandchildren: Kelsey Day Ladwig and Jenna Day; Matthew, Joshua, and Emma Foresman; Brandon and Nicolas Canino; and Katelyn and Spencer Day. Some of their favorite memories of Papa were spent in the garage, at car shows, or simply by his side as he worked on engines, fixed just about anything, shared stories, and quietly passed down life lessons without ever needing a grand speech. His grandchildren knew him as steady, patient, hardworking, and always ready with a helping hand or warm smile. Being “Papa” was one of the greatest joys of his life.
Larry was deeply committed to education and lifelong learning. He completed his degree in Business at The University of Alabama, earned a Master’s Degree in Contracting from Florida Institute of Technology, and later obtained Master’s Degrees in Strategic Leadership and National Resourcing from the Naval War College and Salve Regina University.
Larry’s love for his country was evident throughout his distinguished military career in the United States Army. He proudly served for 27 years, ultimately retiring with the rank of Colonel. His service included a combat tour during the Vietnam War, where he demonstrated exceptional courage, leadership, and dedication to those under his command. Throughout his military career, Larry held command leadership positions at the Captain, Major, Lieutenant Colonel, and Colonel levels, earning the respect and admiration of fellow servicemen and women alike.
Even after retiring from the Army, Larry’s leadership and strong work ethic continued through his career with the AM General Hummer Division, where he served as Vice President. There, he remained closely connected to his lifelong passion for vehicles, engineering, and the continued development of the HUMMER brand.
Cars were far more than a hobby to Larry — they were part of who he was. In his younger years, he raced stock cars and dirt track cars, embracing both the thrill of competition and the craftsmanship behind every machine. He especially loved attending classic car shows with his beautifully restored 1939 Ford Coupe, complete with a custom trailer and scooter modeled after the beloved vehicle. Larry found great joy in sharing stories, advice, and conversation with fellow enthusiasts. Whether polishing chrome, lifting the hood for admirers, or simply enjoying the camaraderie of the car community, he appreciated every detail and every friendship formed along the way.
Larry was also a proud member of the National Street Rod Association and the No-Name Car Club, where friendship and fellowship enriched his later years.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence Wesley Day Sr. and Eileen Heffley; his brother, Timothy Day; and his beloved and devoted wife, Nancy Kay Day.
Larry also deeply loved his cherished West Highland White Terrier, Kenzie. She was far more than a pet — she was a loyal companion and a daily source of comfort and joy. Larry delighted in spoiling her, taking her on walks, and caring for her with the same tenderness and devotion he showed his family.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made in Lawrence and Nancy Day’s honor to the Fisher House Foundation, reflecting their enduring spirit of generosity, compassion, and service to military families.
Larry’s life was a story of devotion — devotion to his country, his family, his friends, and the passions he loved most. He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever carried in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
