Mary Chandler Black

Mary Chandler Black went to her eternal reward on May 8, 2026 at her home in Stuarts Draft, VA. She was born July 1927 in the White Hill community, the youngest child of the late Thomas and Bertha Chandler. Mary lived in Stuarts Draft all her life and was predeceased by her husbands, Sherwood Black and James Marcum. She worked at the Stuarts Draft Post office for over 30 years, retiring in 1983. She served her community as a dedicated member of the Stuarts Draft VFW Auxiliary and the Stuarts Draft Rescue Squad Auxiliary. She joined Calvary United Methodist Church 78 years ago and had the distinction of being the oldest living member.

Mary leaves behind three children, Susan Dameron and husband Tim, of Stuarts Draft, Sharon Betlej and husband Bill of Staunton, Steve Black and wife Joyce, of Pulaski, Va. She is survived by seven grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.

The family is very thankful for the devoted care of Linda Harris, niece, and her husband Johnny and the wonderful care provided by Augusta Health Hospital and Skilled Nursing Facility, Augusta Health Hospice of the Shenandoah and for the prayers, cards, calls, and visits of her many friends.

A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on May 16, 2026 at Calvary United Methodist Church with Pastors David Vaughan and Meredith Webb officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before the service and invites friends to join a celebration of life which will be held immediately following the service.
