Isabel “Isa” Santiago, a woman of indomitable spirit and boundless curiosity, passed away peacefully in Houston, Texas, on April 27, 2026. Born in May 1949 in Monterrey, Mexico, Isa lived a life defined not by the five-year battle she fought against cancer, but by the vibrancy and grace with which she chose to live every day in spite of it. To know Isa was to know a woman who refused to be anchored; she was an adventurer who explored the corners of the globe, consistently defying the odds and proving that her zest for discovery was far more powerful than any diagnosis.
For decades, Isa served as a cornerstone of the community, pouring her heart into the students of Bane and Lee Elementary Schools and the greater Cy-Fair Independent School District. As a dedicated bilingual educator, she specialized in the formative years of Kindergarten through Second Grade, providing a bridge for Spanish-speaking children to find their voices in English. She was more than a teacher; she was a mentor and a fierce advocate for bilingual literacy, ensuring her students had a foundation of confidence and skill. The lifelong friendships she forged within those school hallways became a sanctuary of support, reflecting the profound impact she had on every life she touched.
At home, Isa found peace in the delicate beauties of nature. She was often found in her favorite kitchen nook, watching with quiet joy as birds landed softly on the houses and feeders she had meticulously prepared earlier that morning. Her free spirit was matched only by a sharp, witty nature that could brighten the darkest room. She was a pillar of strength who anchored her family, teaching them that love and laughter are the greatest tools for any journey.
Isa is survived by her devoted husband, Luis R. Santiago; her son and daughter-in-law, Luis O. and Victoria; and her cherished grandson, Sebastian. She also leaves behind numerous siblings, nieces, nephews, and a wide circle of friends who became family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jose and Maria Herrera, and her brothers, Luis and Leandro.
