At 92, our beloved Tota Joe has been journeyed home. Born Joseph Aiento:ni Canadian, he spent his early years in Brooklyn with his family.
When he returned to Kahnawake, he spent his adolescence enjoying the river, playing baseball, and hunting. He was an avid reader, writer, historian, and language keeper.
In adulthood, he was a union ironworker, he travelled throughout the states and provinces. Later, he spent many years as a security guard at the Kateri Hospital. He was a kind, caring man who made friends everywhere he went.
He was a skilled gunsmith and expert marksman. Guns were his lifelong passion and helped many Kahnawakehro:non with repair.
In his final years, he spent his days making bullets, going to the ranges, story telling, and engaging in political discussions.
His greatest joy was family and he leaves behind his chosen daughter, Jo-Ann, his grand children, Konwahsenna:wi (Onowi:io), Aronhien:sere (Heather), Kahionwinehshon (Jerome) and his 7 great grandchildren. Also, many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Heartfelt appreciation for the staff of the short term care at KMHC, the ambulance team of the KFB, and the Home Care team.
