Phillip “Mick” Herbert, 88, passed away peacefully on April 15, 2026, at the Truman VA Hospital in Columbia, Missouri. He was born on December 28, 1937, in Youngstown, Ohio, to Charles and Ruth Herbert. On May 14, 1960, he married Sharon Ann Newsom, who preceded him in death.

Mick honorably and proudly served in the United States Army for 20 years. He was a member of the U.S. Army Special Forces (Green Berets), HALO paratrooper, and Airborne-qualified. He served two tours in Vietnam with the highly classified Military Assistance Command, Vietnam – Studies and Observations Group (MACV-SOG). His final military assignment was as an ROTC instructor at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri. Throughout his distinguished service, he received several commendations, including the Bronze Star with “V” device, Combat Infantryman Badge and Purple Heart.

Following his military career, Mick continued his public service with the Fulton Police Department, beginning as a patrolman and quickly rising through the ranks to become Chief of Police. He was also a FBI National Academy graduate, Quantico, Virginia.

Throughout his life, Mick enjoyed scuba diving, motorcycling, fishing, and was a member of several military organizations, including the Special Operations Association. His two favorite things in life were being with family, and sharing stories and a cold beer with friends. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Elizabeth Shanks and Constance Gallagher. He is survived by his children, Deborah (Edward) Dixon and Michael Sean (Sandy) Herbert; his grandchildren, Brittany (Jessie) Johnson, Claire Dixon, Benjamin “Gus” Dixon, Haley (Cory) Reeves, Kaitlyn Herbert, Brandon (Rikki) Herbert, and Christopher “CJ” (Jenna) Herbert; as well as eight great-grandchildren.

Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. on May 7, 2026 at Memorial Funeral Home in Columbia, Missouri, followed by a service at 2:00 p.m. His urn will then be reunited with his wife of 54 years, Sharon. Following the service, friends and family will raise a glass at Mick’s favorite watering hole in his honor.
