Curtis Morris Peterson, 84, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family after a brief illness.
Curt was born in Casselton, North Dakota, where he was raised on a family farm. The values he learned there—hard work, humility, faith, perseverance, and kindness—remained the foundation of his life and guided everything he did throughout his life.
He devoted his life to education, scientific research, leadership, and service. Curt earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Moorhead State University and later received his Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Oregon. Over a distinguished academic career spanning more than four decades, he served in numerous leadership roles at Auburn University, the University of Northern Colorado, and West Virginia University.
Most notably, Curt served as Vice President for Research and Economic Development at West Virginia University and President of the WVU Research Corporation from 2008 to 2011. In those roles, he led major research initiatives, advanced technology and economic development programs, secured significant grant funding, and helped position the university as a nationally recognized research institution. His work and research collaborations also included projects with NASA, reflecting the broad impact and respect he earned throughout the scientific community. He authored more than 165 technical reports and published over 50 scientific articles in national and international journals. Beyond his many accomplishments, he was deeply respected as a mentor, teacher, scientist, and leader who believed strongly in helping others succeed.
But to those who knew him best, Curt’s greatest accomplishments were never found in his titles or publications — they were found in his love for his family. He was, by far, the best father and grandfather anyone could have ever asked for. He was steady, wise, patient, generous, and endlessly supportive. His children and grandchildren knew they could always count on him for guidance, encouragement, laughter, and unconditional love.
Curt was a devoted man of faith and served as a lector in the Catholic Church for many years. He was also known as someone who was always the first to step in and help anyone in need, never asking for recognition and never hesitating to give his time, knowledge, or support to others.
He passed surrounded by his loving wife, Judy; his oldest son, Craig; his daughter, Jill; and his youngest son, John.
Curt was preceded in death by his parents, Justus and Elizabeth Peterson; his brother, Kenneth Peterson; his sisters, Beth Radermacher and Mary Jo Altstadt; and his nephew, Christopher Myhre.
Curt is survived by his beloved wife, Judy Peterson; his children, Craig Peterson, Jill Peterson Muir, and John Peterson; and his cherished grandchildren, Daniel Muir, Madison Muir, Joshua Peterson, and Jacob Peterson.
His legacy of faith, compassion, integrity, leadership, and love for family will continue to live on in all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A private family service will be held to celebrate his life.
