Dale Edward Mitchell passed away unexpectedly but peacefully at home on May 10, 2026, in New Milford, CT. He was the husband of Cheryl Gilbert Mitchell.
Dale was born in Danbury, CT on January 1, 1955, and was the son of the late James E. and Joan M. (Birch) Mitchell.
Dale grew up in Danbury and attended Saint Gregory School and graduated from Danbury High School in 1974 where he enjoyed sports and formed many lasting friendships.
He met the love of his life, Cheryl Gilbert, while they were students at Northwestern Connecticut Community College and they have been together ever since. Dale and Cheryl recently celebrated their 48-year wedding anniversary.
Dale had a big personality and an even bigger sense of humor, always a major presence at all of the functions he attended. He enjoyed boating on Candlewood Lake with Cheryl and his family, golf outings, music, bowling, the annual family wiffle ball game, playing cards and games and spending time with his cherished grandchildren.
Dale loved sports and enthusiastically cheered on his favorite teams, especially the Boston Red Sox, NE Patriots and the UCONN Huskies.
Dale worked his way through the ranks at Durkin Awning, in Danbury, where he began as a high school summer employee and later a sales representative, until retiring several years ago.
Besides his wife, Cheryl, Dale is survived by his daughter, Kelley Mitchell (Jeremy Geruch) of Lebanon, CT; his sons: Dale Mitchell (Allison) of Woodbury, CT; and Brett Mitchell (Mackenzie) of New Milford, CT. His four grandchildren: Lauren, Brayden, Kaleigh and Margaret. His six siblings: Karen Mitchell, Jim Mitchell (Leslie), Steve Mitchell, Jan Mitchell, Sherri Spina (John) and Christopher Mitchell (Wendy); his aunt, Judi Annunziata; sister-in-law, Holly Manfredi (Mike); brother-in-law, Raymond Gilbert (Pam); and Paul Gilbert (Kris); as well as many cherished nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents and grandparents, Dale was also predeceased by his father and mother-in-law, Richard and Justine Gilbert; his brother-in-law, Richard Gilbert; and his nephew, Robert Gilbert, MD.
Friends will be received from 12 -2PM on Sunday, May 31, 2026, at Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, CT. A prayer service will follow from 2 - 2:30PM.
