Betty S. Wafford, a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend—passed away peacefully on May 16, 2026, at the age of 94. She was surrounded by her loving family and friends.
Born on March 5, 1932, in Lexington, Kentucky, Betty was the cherished daughter of Harry and Prudence Stone. She grew up in Lexington, graduated from Henry Clay High School, and continued her education locally, fostering a lifelong love for learning and her community.
Many years later, she moved to Austin then Leander, Texas, to live in the Lone Star State and embrace the Texas way of life.
Throughout her life, Betty was a true Kentuckian of the Bluegrass State. Her dedication and character were officially recognized when she was honored as a Kentucky Colonel. A passionate Big Blue fan, she fiercely cheered on her University of Kentucky Wildcats, where she also served a long, fulfilling career in the Department of Education where she retired.
Betty was married to Ralph Wafford, Jr., and together they raised two sons, Steven S. Wafford and Gary A. Wafford. She was deeply loved and honored by her sons, both of whom proudly carry on her cherished Kentucky traditions with their own families.
Her legacy of love lives on through her children and grandchildren and was affectionately known by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as "GG."
● Steven and Anne Wafford of Lexington, Kentucky, and their five children, Christopher, Mary, Margaret, Gary and Megan who blessed her with several great grandchildren.
● Gary and Therese Wafford of Cedar Park, Texas, and their three children, Jeremiah, Gregory, and Danielle, who further blessed her life with many great grandchildren.
An avid traveler and a lover of history—especially that of her home state—Betty made lifelong friends wherever she went. Everyone who knew her was touched by her immense warmth and kindness. Betty had a rare gift for truly enveloping herself in the lives of others, always taking a genuine, heartfelt interest in everyone she met. It was always a marvel how, upon meeting you again, she could effortlessly strike up a conversation and remember every detail about your life with such sincere care.
An enthusiastic animal lover, Betty adored all pets, but she held a particularly special place in her heart for her cats. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her memory to the Humane Society.
A Celebration of Life for close family and friends will be held on June 5, 2026 at Weed Corley Fish in Leander.
Private family services with burial will be held in Lexington cemetery.
Weep no more my lady
Oh! weep no more today!
We will sing one song for the old Kentucky home,
For the Old Kentucky Home far away.
