Michael Serniuk

Kirkland, Quebec Voluntas

It is with much respect and admiration that we announce the peaceful passing of Michael Serniuk. He leaves behind a lifetime of memories shared with his beloved wife of 63 years, Mary McCarthy, who will miss him dearly.

It was through their love of teaching that their story began, and together they built a life of fulfilled dreams. Their first home in Dollard des Ormeaux is where they raised their children, Karen (Harry), Kevin (Heather), Chris (Eleanor), Glen (Ruth), and Kelly.

Known affectionately as Grandpa, G-pa, GG-pa—or even “Gido”— he was equally proud of his 10 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren: Eric (Nicki), Megan, Adam (Marie-Eve), Hayden, Victoria, Kristyn, Moira, Ryan, Sara, Scott, Felix, and Sophia.

Mike enjoyed pursuing new hobbies and was fearless in his approach. He loved gardening, coaching, puzzles, family vacations, and volunteering for a variety of causes. He rarely sat still for long—if there was something new to learn or fix, Mike was already halfway into it. His curiosity about life’s possibilities and his desire for new experiences led him to find his forever home in Kirkland, as well as a beach retreat in Destin, Florida, where his interests continued to grow over many years.

When traveling abroad came to an end, his long-pursued dream of building a cottage provided another cherished outlet. Time spent fishing on the lake brought him the peace he valued, along with the opportunity to create even more memories with family. Frequent visits and dinners were lively, filled with laughter, and will beremembered always.

Spending time with family and friends, working on projects, or sharing a story were among his greatest joys. He was a fierce protector, a steady provider, and a constant source of motivation—always wanting those he loved to share in his efforts and successes. Laughter, hard work, persistence, and appreciation formed the foundation of his life. Yet his greatest pride was never in his own accomplishments, but in the joy he felt watching his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren succeed.

The sentiment of gratitude that he shared at the end of every day was genuine and heartfelt:

“Today was a great day”
