Robert Conklin Writer, age 84, of Stuart, FL, died after a brief illness on May 15th, 2026.
Born on October 2, 1941, in Nyack, NY, Robert was the son of the late VanDuzer (Van) Modina Writer and Josephine Gedney VanNess Writer. He grew up as the oldest of three boys and, as a child, enjoyed fishing with his grandfather in Merriewold, NY, and playing tennis at the Nyack Field Club. At Nyack High School, he was the captain of the varsity tennis team and went on to play in college at Fairleigh Dickinson University. He graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering and worked as a Chemical Plant Manager for DuPont for more than 30 years.
Robert was a boisterous storyteller who enjoyed researching his ancestors and sharing tales from the family tree. After settling in Middletown Township, New Jersey, with his wife and daughter, he enjoyed spending summers at Surfrider Beach Club in Rumson, NJ, skiing in the Northeast with his daughter, and playing golf and tennis. True to his name, he lived up to being a Writer by freelancing for The Asbury Park Press in his spare time.
After retirement, he settled with his wife in Stuart, Florida, where he quickly became a very well-respected figure in the local tennis community. He organized the first tennis team in the Summerfield Community, where he served as Captain for many years and led the team to a league championship.
In addition to being a fixture on the tennis courts, Bob loved playing golf and was proud to have achieved three career holes-in-one. He enjoyed dining out with his wife and friends, volunteering at Martin Memorial South, and spending quality time with his grandsons. He was very proud that they followed in his footsteps with passions for tennis, golf, and engineering.
Robert leaves behind his wife of nearly fifty years, Rita Boehm Writer; his daughter, Amanda Jo Writer; and his four grandsons, Robert Van DiFiore, Owen Thomas DiFiore, Quinn Ronald DiFiore, and Timothy John DiFiore. He is also missed by his youngest brother, Dean Taft Writer, and his wife Janet. His younger brother, Peter VanDuzer Writer (husband to Cyndy), passed away before him.
There will be no public funeral or memorial services. Instead, the family requests that donations be made to Treasure Coast Hospice.
