Charles Everett "Chuck" Cantrell, 84, died September 7, 2026. Born in Walnut, North Carolina on April 29, 1942, Charles made his way through life with a steady kindness, a generous spirit, and the sort of resilience that didn’t ask for applause, though it often earned it anyway. He later lived in Harrison, Tennessee.
Charles attended H. Clay Evans Grammar School in Chattanooga and received his GED, a reflection of his determination to keep moving forward and meet life head-on, one practical step at a time.
He served in the United States Navy as a Signalman, whose primary duty was visual communications, lookout duties and navigational support. He served aboard the U.S.S. Coral Sea during the Cuban Missile Crisis, an experience that asked for calm under pressure and a backbone strong enough to match the moment. After his service, he worked with National Transfer as a driver, primarily on the West Coast, delivering hydrogen. It was honest work that required care, grit, and responsibility, and Charles brought all three along with a decency that made people glad to see him coming.
An avid golfer who enjoyed sports of all kinds, Charles could appreciate both the big moments and the small ones, whether it was a well-struck shot, a good game, or the simple pleasure of time spent with friends.
Charles was preceded in death by his wife of 36 years, Billie Jo “Jody” Cantrell. Left behind to cherish his memory are his children, Eric Cantrell (Angela) and Christy King; grandchildren, Cody Cantrell (Corinne), Kay Ericksson, Trip Poe and Jackson Poe; 3 great-grandchildren; brother, Tommy Cantrell (Beverly); several cousins, nieces, and golf buddies.
A graveside Celebration of Life will be held in the Hamilton Memorial Gardens on Thursday September 10, 2026, at 1:00 pm.
