Charles Harlon “Hal” Wilbanks Jr., born February 12, 1950, passed away at the age 76, leaving behind many family members and friends who loved him dearly.
Known affectionately to many as “Pal Hal,” he lived a life defined by kindness, humor, generosity, and deep love for the people around him. Hal was born to Charles H. Wilbanks and Margaret Jane Wilbanks in Shreveport, Louisiana.
After proudly serving his country in the United States Air Force Reserves, Hal worked many different jobs throughout his life, often joking that he had done everything possible to avoid getting rich. Among all his experiences, he most enjoyed opportunities that allowed him to express his love of cooking. Following culinary school, he worked for country music star John Anderson at his restaurant in Smithville, Tennessee, and later operated his own Ark-La-Tex BBQ shop in Shreveport.
Outside of work, Hal found peace and happiness outdoors, especially while caring for his property in the woods of Rodessa. He loved cooking daily meals, gathering with friends, planting flowers, and turning discarded treasures into unique works of art. More than anything, Hal loved life and the people who filled it.
With an endless collection of one-liners, unforgettable stories, and a warm spirit that drew people to him everywhere he went, Hal formed friendships that lasted a lifetime. He lived each day exactly as he wanted — with positivity, compassion, and selflessness toward those he loved most. His devotion to his wife, family, and close circle of friends was evident in everything he did.
Hal was preceded him in death with his beloved wife, Anna Catherine Wilbanks and parents Charles H. Wilbanks and Margaret Jane Wilbanks.
He is survived by his step-son, Andrew Baker of Houston, Texas; his brother, J.T Wilbanks of Shreveport, Louisiana; sister-in-law Mary Beth Davis of Shreveport, Louisiana; and brother- and sister-in-law David and Marilyn Davis of Metairie, Louisiana.
Hal could never be replaced, but he will forever be loved and remembered by the many lives he touched.
