Charles "Papa Chaz" Sam Wakeem

Charles Sam “Papa Chaz” Wakeem, 81 of El Paso, TX, passed away unexpectedly in his home on Friday, May 22, 2026.He was born on November 16th, 1944, to Sam and Mary Wakeem in El Paso where he lived his whole life. He graduated from El Paso High School in 1962 and from Texas Western University (now UTEP) in 1966 with a bachelor’s degree in business.He met Diane Beyer in 1967 and on May 1, 1971, they were married. He worked with his brother, William, as manager of Skyline Furniture for many years until his retirement in 1993. Charlie loved his family and when he was not working, he spent his time with Diane, and sons Kevin and Scott by taking them on trips across the state and country. He also took his sons on many adventures such as skiing, boating, camping, and hunting as they were growing up. He was a proud UTEP Miner, often found tailgating with friends and going to football and basketball games for many years. He loved to tell stories of his days at Texas Western and their national championship that occurred during his senior year.After retirement, he spent his time advocating open spaces in El Paso as he loved its natural beauty; especially its sunsets. Dedicated to preserving natural spaces, he was instrumental in saving the arroyo behind his home which now bears his name- Wakeem/Teschner Nature Preserve at Resler Canyon.Charlie had a special relationship with his grandson with whom they would watch Looney Tunes cartoons and argue about who loves who more or who belonged to who. He also shared his love of music and famous old comedy routines with him. The two could often be found in Papa Chaz’ office listening to music from the 1960’s and 70’s or laughing at Johnny Carson.Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings, William Rhey, Elizabeth Grissom, Yvonne Milligan. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Diane, his son Kevin and his longtime girlfriend Diana Estrada Granados in El Paso, son Scott and his wife Stephanie and their son, Weston of Garland, TX.Funeral arrangements are under the care of Martin Funeral Home at 128 Resler Dr, El Paso, TX 79912. A memorial service is set for Saturday, May 30, 2026, at 10:00 A.M. followed by a reception onsite.In lieu of flowers the family asks for donations be made to Frontera Land Alliance @ http://fronteralandalliance.org.
