Craig Steven Goodknight

August 10, 2026 Dignity Memorial

Craig Steven Goodknight passed away peacefully on August 10, 2026, in Grand Junction, Colorado. Born on September 27, 1949, in Wichita, Kansas, to his loving parents John Victor and Betty Goodknight. Craig spent his childhood in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where from an early age he showed interest in the outdoors, earning his Eagle Scout badge.

After earning a B.S. in Geology from the University of Tulsa and a M.S. in Geology from the University of New Mexico, Craig worked as a Geologist in Texas and Utah before making Grand Junction his permanent home.

Working for the Department of Energy, he combined his professional expertise with an enduring passion for learning through exploration, hiking, skiing, and mountaineering around Colorado, in the greater U.S., and abroad. He shared his gift, not just in the hikes he led, but also through his many publications that included topographic maps and guides, which will live on forever.

Craig will be remembered for his love of nature, geology, community involvement, and unwavering devotion to his family.

Craig is survived by his children Steven Goodknight, Michael Goodknight (daughter-in-law, Nicole), and Lucinda Stoneberger (son-in-law, Brad); grandchildren Mason and Zoey Goodknight, and Heidi, Cyrus, and Henry Stoneberger; sister Vicki Dixon (husband, Steve); and niece Lauren Dixon (husband, Max Baire).

A Celebration of Life will be held on September 12, 1:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 3940 27 1/2 Road, Grand Junction, Colorado followed by a reception.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Grand Junction Geological Society and Petroleum and Mining Club.
