Don Elliott Banks

Mr. Don Elliott Banks, age 86, passed away on July 12th, 2026 in Dallas, Texas.Don was born on June 3rd, 1940 in Mathis, Texas to Buford Clarence Banks and Florence Roberta Elliott Banks. He grew up in Robstown, Texas and graduated from Robstown High School in 1958. Don went on to continue his studies at the University of Texas in Austin where he earned the degree of Bachelor of Science in Chemistry in 1963. His degree of Masters in Mathematics soon followed.Don married Carmen Louisa Mercado on November 20th, 1965. They began their married life together in Houston, Texas and had two children: Robyn and Brian. It was also in Houston where Don began his career as a research chemist with Hunt-Wesson Foods.In 1970, the family moved to Dallas where he continued his career with Frito-Lay, which later became part of Pepsico. From 1997 to 2020, he created his own company, Edible Oils Technology. The business provided expert consultancy services to an international client base for the production and use of soybean oils. Don was also a consultant for the American Soybean Association and was a member of staff with Qualisoy. While his work took him to many places around the world, he also enjoyed being a judge for local school children’s science fairs in Dallas.Don’s inquisitive nature inspired a lifelong fascination with understanding how things worked. This was most often evident in his joy of working on automobiles. He could also regularly be seen tinkering with clocks, washing machines, lawn mowers or anything else that needed repair. Don also had a love of sports. At Robstown High School, he participated in athletics and was a kicker for the Cotton Pickers football team. He remained active in sports throughout his life, playing singles tennis and doubles with Carmen as well as becoming an accomplished golfer. He also played soccer with Frito-Lay's Lazy Legs team and softball for many years with the White Rock United Methodist Church team as a pitcher.Don was preceded in death by his parents, Buford and Florence Banks; his sister, Kalani Banks; and his beloved wife, Carmen. He is survived by his son, Brian Banks; his daughter, Robyn Lawrance; and his grandson, Oscar Lawrance.Though fiercely independent and a man of few words, Don never hesitated to answer a call for help or support. His genuine care and concern for others shone through in the thoughtful ways he served and supported those around him. His care and concern for others were expressed through his actions. Don will be remembered for his intellect, practicality, resourcefulness, kindness and generosity. He will be greatly missed.A Graveside Service will be held at Blanco Cemetery, 401 Chandler St, Blanco, TX 78606 on July 28, 2026, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm.
