Donald Fowler of New City, NY, 94 years old, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on April 19,2026. He is survived by his son and daughter in-law (Donald and Kathy) and daughters and sons in law, (Doreen and Ed, Kathy and John, Joanann and Rawn). He is also survived by grandchildren (Gerard and Diana, Megan and Jerry, John and Tara, Christopher and Jennifer, Kevin and Hannah, Mary Kate and Mario, Jack, Grace and Chloe) and nine great grandchildren (Vincent, Archie, Gunnar, Louisa, Gianna, Benedict, Sean, Owen, Reagan, Riley) and and two more grandchildren to be born in May and August.
He was predeceased in death by his mother and father Sarah and David Fowler, his loving wife of 50 years, Joan and his older brother, David.
Donald was born in Queens, NY. He attended Newtown High in Corona, NY. Don played basketball for his high school team and once was referred to as Dynamic Don on the basketball court in a newspaper clipping. Don was very athletic, playing handball, soft ball as a young man and golfed well into his 80’s. Don played golf with a group of men who called themselves the Grasshoppers, he enjoyed playing with his brother-in-law, Bernard, and his nephew Tommy along with many fine men.
Donald served his country in the Unites States Navy during the Korean War.
Donald married the love of his life, Joan in 1956. Joan and Don were a fun-loving couple who together enjoyed life. They were able to travel the United States and Europe together. When Joan was sick, Donald was the ultimate caregiver. Donald was the Patriarch of his both sides of his family the Fowlers and the Sweeneys. Don enjoyed a great relationship with all his nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
He was an active parishioner at St. Augustine’s and was a Bingo Captain for 40 years. Don had great friends on his bingo team who became lifelong friends. Don attended mass at 5 o’clock on Saturday, meeting his friends Red Fay and Charlie Hennelly. He would then go along and enjoy dinner at Citiline with his church group which included lifelong friend Joan Spaeth as well as many other ladies. Donald was active in the Clarkstown Senior Clubs in New City and Congers. He enjoyed playing cards with his men friends and his senior trips to the casinos.
Donald was lucky to live in the same house for the more than sixty years. He had wonderful neighbors and friends, who he very much as appreciated especially Patty and Jimmy Killeen who lived across the street for more than 40 years.
Donald had lengthy career as an Ironworker in Local 46, he was well known and well respected amongst his peers within the industry.
Donald had a great life; he led by example to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
A visitaiton will be held on Wednesday, April 22nd from 3-7pm, at Michael J. Higgins Funeral Home; 321 S. Main St. New City, NY 10956. Funeral mass will be on Thursday April 23at 10 AM at Saint Augustine’s Church New City, followed by a burial in Saint Anthony’s in Nanuet, New York.
