It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Elisabeth “Betty” Van Der Wal, of Richmond, Québec. Born in the Netherlands, she came to Canada at an early age and always remained a proud Frieslander.
Betty was the devoted mother of four children: Robin (Chuck), Connie (Patrick), Jeff (Marie-Josée) and John; cherished grandmother to Phoenix (Monica), Jordan, Avery, Jake, Aimee, Sebastien, Elliot, Mackenzie, Kaleb and Alexia; and cherished great grandmother to Myles. She shared many years with her long time companion, Donald, whose presence brought her love, laughter, comfort, and support.
She was deeply proud of her family and took great joy in watching her children and grandchildren grow and succeed. Throughout her life, she contributed to her community in many meaningful ways, always offering steadiness and a willingness to help wherever she was needed.
Betty was known for her love of conversation, her sharp wit, and the joy she found in time spent with her grandchildren. She followed the news and loved talking about what was happening in the world, and she kept many books about the people and events that shaped history. She cherished nature and the companionship of her beloved cats, and she was happiest at home. She enjoyed baking, gardening, reading, collecting antiques and going ‘garage saling’.
Among her belongings, she left a poem — a reflection of her spirit and a message for those she loved:
“Just close your eyes and you will see all the memories that you have of me...
Don’t cry for me now that I am gone, for I am in the land of song…
I am in a place that is filled with love, known to you all as Up Above.”
