Elizabeth “Betty” Brumfield Leavitt, 87, passed away on August 10, 2026, in Jacksonville, Florida. She was born on March 27, 1939, in Louisa, Kentucky, and was raised just across the bridge in Fort Gay, West Virginia.
Betty graduated from Fort Gay High School with the Class of 1957. During her high school years, she played on the girls’ basketball team and proudly served as a drum majorette with the marching band. Following graduation, Betty worked in Louisa for a year before moving to Columbus, Ohio, where she began her career with Ohio Bell Telephone Company. Two years later, she transferred to Southern Bell in Cocoa, Florida.
It was while working in Cocoa that Betty met Jerry Leavitt, who also worked for Southern Bell. The two married in 1963 and began building their life together. While living in Cocoa, they welcomed their two sons, David and Steve.
In 1970, Jerry’s career with Southern Bell brought the family to Jacksonville, Florida. While raising their sons, Betty worked for the Duval County School Board. She began as a teacher’s aide and later worked in the front offices at Fort Caroline Elementary School and Terry Parker High School. Through her work, Betty became a familiar and valued part of the school communities she served.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Louise and Virgil Brumfield, and her husband, Jerry Leavitt.
She is survived by her sons, David and Steve; their wives, Marie Leavitt and Tracy Leavitt; and her grandchildren and step-grandchildren: Matthew Leavitt, Ethan Leavitt, Sarah Leavitt, Daniel Stiles, Austin Stiles, Faith Storey, and Saul Storey.
Betty’s life was one marked by devotion to her family, hard work, and the many communities she called home—from her childhood in Fort Gay to the life she and Jerry built together in Florida. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her family and all those whose lives she touched.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to Community Hospice of Jacksonville for the compassion, kindness, and loving care provided to Betty during her final days.
The family with hold a memorial service at a later date.
