Howard Marshall “Andy” Anderson, 84, of Lake Jackson, Texas, passed away on Tuesday, September 29, 2026. Born on December 28, 1941, in Van Zandt County, Andy was the son of the late Howard and Farris Audean Anderson, who instilled in him the values of hard work, service, and integrity that would guide him throughout his life.
Andy spent many years employed at Dow, where he was known for his reliability, strong work ethic, and steady presence. Yet those who knew him best understood that his greatest calling was public service. In 1966, he joined the Lake Jackson Volunteer Fire Department—a decision that would shape the next five decades of his life. For 50 years, Andy served his community with unwavering dedication, answering calls at all hours, mentoring younger firefighters, and embodying the spirit of volunteerism. His retirement in 2016 marked the end of an extraordinary chapter of service, but his influence continued to be felt long after.
His commitment to training and education was equally profound. For 23 years, Andy served as an instructor with TEEX (Texas Engineering Extension Service), where he helped prepare countless firefighters across the state. His teaching style blended deep knowledge with patience, humor, and a genuine desire to see others succeed. Many who trained under him credit Andy with shaping their careers and strengthening their confidence in the field.
Andy’s involvement in the community extended far beyond the fire service. He was a familiar face at local events and a driving force behind many traditions. He helped organize the Festival of Lights Gobbler Cook-off for 27 years, bringing people together through food, fellowship, and friendly competition. As a judge with the IBCA , he became known for his fairness, enthusiasm, and appreciation for good barbecue. He also enjoyed riding motorcycles with the Brazoria County Cavalry, finding camaraderie and purpose in supporting veterans and first responders. As a charter member of the Red Knights, Andy served as President, leading with the same steady hand and generous spirit that defined all his endeavors.
In recognition of his lifetime of service, Andy will be honored in 2027 by the State Firefighters’ and Fire Marshals’ Association. His name will be added to the wall at the Texas A&M Fire Training Center—a lasting tribute to a man who devoted so much of his life to protecting others and strengthening the fire service community.
Andy is preceded in death by his granddaughter Kendra, his brother Charles, and his wife Sylvia, with whom he shared many years of partnership.
He is survived by his daughters, Kelley McDowell and her husband Tawn, and Staci Larson and her husband Richard. Andy also leaves behind his grandson Bryson McDowell and his great granddaughter Maci Powell.
A Celebration of Andy’s Life will be held on Friday, October 2nd, at the Lake Jackson Civic Center (Terrace Rooms). Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m., followed by a brief service at 2:00 p.m. Family, friends, and members of the community are invited to gather, share memories, and honor a life lived in service to others.
