John Robert (“Rocky”) Rowell passed away at the age of 76 on May 28, 2026 at Community Hospice after a long illness.
Rocky was born in Atlanta on January 8, 1950 to the late Robert O. and Vannie Rowell and moved to Jacksonville as an infant. His sister Susan joined the family three years after Rocky’s birth.
He attended schools in the Arlington area and graduated from Terry Parker High School, where he earned his nickname.
He subsequently attended Florida State University where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. He later joined his father in his home building business.
He loved music, notably Bob Dylan and Rod Stewart; history; his many friends and all sports but especially Seminole’s football.
He is survived by his beloved wife Kay, his dear sister Susan Howell (David), nephews John-Michael (Julia), Andrew (Jacquelyn), niece Priscilla Cartwright (Bobby); brothers-in-law Mal Redington (Lani) and Tim Redington and nephew Blair Redington (Parker) and many beloved grand nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his nephew Nathaniel Howell.
A Celebration of Rocky’s Life will be held on Friday, July 10 from 1:00-3:00pm at The Point at San Marco Presbyterian Church, 2137 Hendricks Avenue. (Parking available in garage behind the church off Mitchell street).
