Kelvin "Gene" Eugene Phillips

Gene Phillips passed away on September 15, 2026, at the age of 70, after a life defined by love for his family, hard work, perseverance, and an unwavering devotion to his Kansas Jayhawks.

Born on April 1, 1956, Gene was the son of Irvin Riley Phillips and Fumiko Phillips. He was preceded in death by his father, Irvin.

Gene is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Irma; his daughter, Vanessa; his mother, Fumiko; his siblings, Yoneko (John) Kenyon and Bill (Susan) Phillips; his niece, Angela (Mike) Kassees; and his nephew, David (Tracy) Phillips, and numerous cousins.

Above all else, Gene was a family man. He and Irma shared 40 loving years of marriage, building a life together rooted in devotion, partnership, and family. Gene was hard-working throughout his life and did everything he could for the people he loved. For 38 years, he worked for Boeing, retiring after a long career. He was especially proud of his daughter, Vanessa, and never missed an opportunity to tell others about her accomplishments or how proud he was of the life she had built.

Gene was also quite possibly the biggest Jayhawk fan around. He watched every Kansas football and basketball game and loved talking about his teams. Whether the season brought celebration or frustration, his loyalty never wavered.

He was a sharp dresser who appreciated looking his best, made possible in no small part by the perfectly ironed shirts lovingly pressed by his wife, Irma. He loved his Starbucks Iced Coffee and Sweet Tea, and he had a way of finding enjoyment in the familiar things that became part of the rhythm of his life.

Gene also had a Green Thumb, which was evident with his large collection of plants he had acquired from family friends. Another joy were his outdoor creatures; birds, squirrels and more that he made sure were always well fed. These came only second to his love of dogs.

For more than 26 years, Gene faced multiple health challenges. Again and again, he persevered. His resilience allowed him to continue being present for the family he loved.

Those who knew Gene will remember a man who worked hard, cared for his family deeply, took tremendous pride in his daughter, and kept going even when life asked an extraordinary amount of him. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished and in the countless memories they will carry with them.
