Lucia Sada Mares, age 88, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 26, 2026. Lucia was born in El Paso, Texas, the third of four daughters to Higinio Ricardo and Maria Lucia Hage Sada.

A proud graduate of Ysleta High School, Lucia went on to earn her Bachelors of Arts Degree in Education from Texas Western College. In 1959, she married the love of her life, Gilberto Mares, with whom she shared 65 wonderful years. Together, they began their life as a United States Air Force family, making homes in Mississippi and Anchorage, Alaska, before returning to El Paso in 1964 to raise their children.

As an educator, Lucia began her teaching career at Fort Richardson in Alaska. Her passion for service extended beyond the classroom, later serving as El Paso High School PTA President. Deeply devoted to her faith and community, she also volunteered with the St. Patrick Cathedral children’s religious education program.

Lucia and Gilberto shared a love of travel, exploring the world together and collecting memories that reflected their wonder and joy for life. Above all, Lucia cherished faith, family, and friendship. Her home was always open and a welcoming place filled with the aromas of her wonderful cooking, the sound of laughter, and the warmth of conversation. She was known for her generosity, hospitality, and ability to make everyone feel loved. Lucia’s vibrant spirit left a lasting impression on all who were fortunate to know her. She was truly a remarkable woman.

Lucia is survived by her children Patricia Saxman, Anna Mares, and Luis G. Mares (Leticia) and her granddaughters Shannon Saxman Vent (Chris) and Lilianna Mares. She is also survived by her beloved sisters Beatrice Sada and Elena Medina (Ricardo) and several nieces and nephews who cherished her dearly. She was preceded in death by her husband Gilberto, her dear sister Cecilia Sada and her son-in-law Peter Saxman.

Lucia’s family extends heartfelt gratitude to her many friends, neighbors, and her children’s lifelong friends, whose love and support sustained her throughout her life and illness. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holy Family Catholic Church.

Funeral services will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church, El Paso, Texas, on May, 22, 2026 at 12:00 pm. Interment to follow at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.
