Margot Julia Castro

Margot Julia Castro, 93, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2026, in the home of her son and daughter-in-law, surrounded by the love of her family. She was born on March 16th, 1933, in Calimete, Cuba, to Augusto and Fabiana Madruga. She was one of seven children living in a busy, rural household. The importance of education was instilled in Margot at an early age, motivating her to complete her Doctorate in Education from Universidad de la Habana.

On September 28th, 1953, Margot married her beloved, “Chiny”, Moises Castro Sr., in Matanzas, Cuba. Their love spanned 73 years. In that time, they built a loving household and raised three wonderful sons. In 1965, the couple emigrated from Cuba to the United States with their children and settled in the Kansas City, Missouri, area.

After moving to Kansas City, Margot completed a master’s degree in Education from the University of Missouri - Kansas City. Upon completing her degree, she worked at St. Teresa’s Academy, Bingham Junior High School, and Westport Middle School teaching Spanish. Margot later chose to leave education and pursue a career with Commercial National Bank that spanned over 30 years.

Family was at the center of Margot’s life; she loved spending time laughing, talking, and reminiscing with her loved ones about Cuba and the good times they shared together in the United States. Her home was always filled with the aromas of her favorite Cuban dishes, including platanos fritos, arroz con pollo, ropa vieja, and arroz con frijoles. In addition to being an excellent cook, Margot was also an amazing baker. She developed a cake baking business, becoming well-known for her elaborate wedding cakes. She was also talented at crochet and needlepoint. Margot created many heirloom items over the years, including Christmas stockings handmade by “Abuela” for every member of her family.

Margot had a “green thumb” when it came to gardening. Her yard was filled with a combination of tropical plants and local foliage that impressed all who visited. She loved to visit the Spring Open House at Family Tree Nursery each year. Her eyes lit up as she walked through the designer gardens. Her retirement was enriched by traveling internationally with family to Europe, Cuba, Canada, The Cayman Islands, and Honduras, as well as lounging on beaches in Florida.

Margot was, in the truest sense of the word, a real “Creative.” She was talented, loving, and encouraging, and will be missed by all who knew her.

Margot was preceded in death by her husband, Moises; her parents, Augusto and Fabiana Madruga; her siblings, Angelia Leon (Antonio), Justo Madruga (Lydia), Mario Madruga (Delia), Noeida Castro (Othoniel); and her granddaughter, Julia Marie. Margot is survived by her siblings, Manuel Madruga, Anoland DeLeon (Jose); her three sons, Moises Castro (Sheralyn), Ramon Castro, Mario Castro (Marianne); her five grandchildren, Stephanie Castro-Rolfes (Matthew), Benjamin Castro (Victoria), Gregory Castro, Darrian Castro (Olivia), Victor Castro (Ellen); and her four great-grandchildren, Evelyn and Sophia Castro, Roman Castro, and Charlotte Castro.
