Maria B. Gomes, 89, of Green Township, New Jersey, passed away peacefully at home on August 18, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.She was born in Portugal on September 29, 1936, to the late Avelino and Albertina Marinho. In search of better opportunities for their family, Maria and her beloved husband, Jose, made the courageous decision to move abroad. They spent 12 years in Brazil, where they welcomed their first child, Carla. They later returned to Portugal, where Manuel and Fernanda were born, before ultimately moving to the United States, where their youngest daughter, Grace, completed the family.Throughout her life, Maria worked many jobs over many years to support her family. She approached every challenge with strength, determination, and a sense of responsibility. Despite the hardships she faced, she never lost the beautiful smile that lit up her face and touched everyone around her.Maria found her greatest joys close to home. She had a lifelong passion for gardening, cooking, and traveling, and she took great pride in her flowers and garden. She also had a deep love for animals. Her kindness, care, and generosity could be felt in everything she did.Above all, Maria cherished her family. She especially treasured her role as a grandmother, and the time she spent with her grandchildren brought her immeasurable joy. Her warmth, kindness, and love will remain in the hearts of all who knew her.Maria is survived by her four children, Carla Feola and her husband, Edward; Manuel Gomes and his wife, Vanderleia; Fernanda Wise and her husband, Curt; and Graciela Dent and her husband, John; her grandchildren, Steven, Matthew, Sophia, and Benjamin; and her brother, Manuel Marinho, and his wife, Mimi and their children and grandchildren.She was predeceased by her loving husband, Jose, and her parents.Maria’s life was one of courage, perseverance, love, and devotion to her family. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 23, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High Street, Newton, NJ 07860. A funeral service will follow at 12:00 PM at the funeral home, with entombment at Newton Cemetery Mausoleum in Newton.
