Mary Stover

Mary Whorley Stover, 93, of Nashville, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2026.

Mary was born in Nashville, Tennessee, on December 11, 1932, to Mary O’Callaghan Whorley, affectionately known as “Bubber,” and John Henry Whorley, known to the family as “Big Daddy.” A lifelong Nashvillian at heart, Mary spent the vast majority of her life within a one-mile radius of Green Hills, a place she loved and called home.

She attended Hillsboro High School and Vanderbilt University, where she was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority. Mary devoted her life to her family as a homemaker, creating a warm and welcoming home for those she loved.

On May 20, 1958, Mary got married in Nashville. She was blessed with a 67-year marriage and a beautiful family that brought her great joy throughout her life.

Mary was a thoughtful and kind-spirited woman who cherished her family and friends. She enjoyed spending time with loved ones, traveling, and volunteering. Her generous spirit led her to be involved in several organizations and community groups, including West End Methodist Church, the Centennial Club of Nashville, the Nashville Auxiliary of the Salvation Army, the Suburbia Garden Club, and Fannie Battle Social Workers.

Above all, Mary treasured her family. She was blessed with two children, seven grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. She will be remembered for her kindness, gracious spirit, devotion to those she loved, and the lasting impact she made on her family and community.

Mary is survived by her husband, Donald Joseph Stover; children, John Donald Stover (Terri) and Susan Stover Dismukes (Dan); her grandchildren, Joseph Edward Stover (Lindsey), Jessi Stover Canales (Franklin), Carli Stover Diamond (Tim), Lawson John Stover, Bradley Daniel Dismukes, Sarah Thomas Lockwood (Dylan), and Jeffrey Houston Dismukes (Natalie); and her beloved great-grandchildren, Isabelle Charles, Jack Emerson, Nora James, Johnathan Mauricio, Madison Leigh, Landon Charles, Helen Lucia, Lynly Frances, Harvey James, Zeke Bennett, Reid Samuel, Esther Jean, and Brinlee Thomas.

Mary’s family is grateful for the many years they were blessed to have her in their lives. Her love, kindness, and quiet strength will continue to live on through the generations she leaves behind.

A graveside service will be held at Mount Olivet Funeral Home & Cemetery, 1101 Lebanon Pike, Nashville, TN 37210, on Thursday, August 13, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
