In Loving Memory of Maureen Sheils Carruthers

September 26, 1925 - September 27, 2026

Maureen Sheils Carruthers, a devoted mother, talented artist, dedicated educator, and beloved family matriarch, passed away peacefully on September 27, 2026, just one day after celebrating her 101st birthday. Her remarkable life spanned more than a century, leaving behind a legacy of love, creativity, perseverance, and unwavering devotion to her family.

Born on September 26, 1925, Maureen was the daughter of Peter and Catherine Sheils and the sister of Eileen Sheils her parents and sister preceded her in death, and their memories remained an important part of her family's story.

Maureen grew up in Topsham, Maine, where her early years helped shape the determination, independence, and quiet strength that would define her throughout her life. She pursued her love of learning and art at Gotham State Teachers College, Portland Art School, and the Rhode Island School of Design. She served as an art teacher in public schools of Brunswick, Maine and later in Burlington, Mass where she fostered creativity in generations of students.

On December 20, 1953, Maureen married Charles W. Carruthers, affectionately known as Charlie. They made their home in Burlington, Massachusetts, and built their family through adoption welcoming two infants into their family: their son, Peter Carruthers, born July 22, 1959, and their daughter, Kitty Carruthers, born May 30, 1961.

For Maureen and Charlie, parenthood was a commitment they embraced with their whole hearts. Recognizing their children's extraordinary promise in figure skating, they devoted more than a decade to saving and making immense financial sacrifices to support Peter and Kitty's training. Their dedication, encouragement, and belief in their children helped make possible a remarkable achievement: Peter and Kitty went on to win the silver medal in pairs figure skating at the 1984 Winter Olympics. Their Olympic

accomplishment stands as a testament not only to the talent and determination of their children, but also to the extraordinary love, faith, and sacrifice of the parents who stood behind them.

While the Olympic achievement brought distinction to the family, Maureen's greatest pride was always her family itself. The love she shared with Charlie and their children was the foundation of her life.

Following Charlie's passing in November 2002, Maureen eventually made her way to Texas to be closer to Kitty and her growing family. She cherished her time with her four grandchildren: Brett Peter Conrad, Kyle Richard Conrad, Kayla Nicole Conrad, and Brooke Elizabeth Conrad. She was also the proud grandmother of Peter's two children, Kurt W. Carruthers and Kenton F. Carruthers. As her family spread across generations and from New England to Texas to Calif. Maureen's love remained a constant thread connecting them all.

Maureen also had a tremendous love for animals, especially dogs. She seemed to have a special gift with them — she could have been a dog whisperer. Dogs were naturally drawn to her, loving her just as much as she loved them. There was something about her gentle spirit and loving nature that animals seemed to recognize instinctively.

In her later years, Maureen resided in Richmond and Katy, Texas, enjoying the comfort of being near her family. Her move to the Lone Star State brought her closer to the people who meant the most to her and allowed her family to share precious time with her as the years passed.

On September 26, 2026, surrounded by the love and care of those around her, Maureen celebrated her 101st birthday as a resident of The Village at Sugar Land, an assisted living and memory care community. Family, friends, and members of the staff gathered to honor her extraordinary longevity and her journey through memory care. It was a meaningful milestone for a woman whose life had touched so many people and whose story spanned an incredible century of change.

Maureen's life was defined by much more than the years she lived or the accomplishments associated with her family. She was an artist at heart, an educator by calling, a devoted wife, and a mother whose love knew no limits. Her life reflected the quiet strength of a woman willing to work, sacrifice, and give generously for those she loved. The family she and Charlie built together remains the most enduring expression of that love.

Though Maureen's passing leaves an immeasurable space in the heads of those who loved her, her legacy will live on in the generations she helped shape, the lives she influenced through teaching, the beauty she found in art, and the memories her family will treasure forever.

A celebration of Maureen's remarkable life, along with her burial will take place in Maine spring of 2027. Details will be shared with family and friends at a later date. She will be forever loved, deeply missed, and always remembered
