Michael Grannis

Robert Michael Grannis, age 79, of Clayton, North Carolina passed away peacefully on Friday, August 21, 2026 at his residence, surrounded by all the love in the hearts of those who knew him.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Friday, September 4, 2026 at McLaurin Funeral Home in Clayton, North Carolina.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, September 5, 2026 in the chapel of McLaurin Funeral Home.

A reception to celebrate Michael Grannis' life will be held following the service at the clubhouse of The Walk at East Village, 49 Bladen Place, Clayton – all are welcome.

Michael was born in Portland, Oregon on November 4th, 1946 to the late George Grannis and the late Mary Ellen Ekstrom Grannis. The family moved to Texas when Michael was six years old and he was raised in Corpus Christi, later moving to Austin for school.

For decades, Mr. Grannis dedicated his time, leadership and heart to the Town of Clayton and the community he called home. He served on the Clayton Town Council from 2006 to 2021, including a stint as Mayor Pro Tem. His commitment to Clayton extended well beyond his service on Council. He was a proud member of both the Clayton Civitan Club and the Clayton Recreational Foundation, giving his time and talents to organizations that strengthened the community.

In 2024, Michael was honored to receive the Clayton Citizen of the Year award. Just last week, the Clayton Civitan Club bestowed upon him a Lifetime Achievement Award, for which he was surprised and humbled. Mr. Grannis served on numerous boards of organizations that made a difference in people’s lives.

Alongside his wife, Betsy, Michael was also a familiar and beloved part of Downtown Clayton. Together, they formerly owned Clayton Steakhouse and the Morning Glory Inn, contributing to the vibrancy and character of downtown for many years. In 2021, Michael and Betsy were honored as the Town of Clayton’s Mr. & Mrs. Christmas, recognizing their many years of service, generosity and giving to the Clayton community.

Mr. Grannis has left an enduring legacy in Clayton - one built through service, leadership, generosity and a genuine commitment to his community. His contributions have touched countless lives, and his impact on Clayton will not be forgotten.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 42 years, Betsy Maricle Grannis; daughters, Heather Anderson and Meghan (Jeff) Fohl; grandchildren, Drew, Emma, Riley, Caelyn, Mason, and Owen; brothers-and sisters-in-law, Lou (Donna) Maricle, Tom (Debra) Maricle, Leslie (Don) Barkley, Martin (Gail) Maricle, Kathryn (Mark) McGuire, and Sally (Harry) Crocker; and numerous nephews and nieces.

The family would like to thank the dedicated and caring doctors and staff at UNC Hospital Chapel Hill as well as the caring nurses, aides and staff of 3HC Home Health Hospice Care for their loving and respectful care.
