Raymond (Ray) Hope Thrift, Jr., was a native of Portsmouth, VA, and passed away on June 23, 2026, at age 87. He was a 1961 graduate of Virginia Tech and served in the Army as a 1st Lieutenant, mostly as a tank driver. After his military service, he worked at Virginia Tech and later at the University of West Florida as the Placement Director. Ray was a champion table tennis player and a talented quilter, known for donating his quilts to nonprofit organizations. He is survived by his wife, Ellen Thrift, and daughter, Catherine Thrift.
