Robert Walter Mackinder

August 18, 2026 Dignity Memorial

Robert Walter Mackinder, a resident of Clinton Township for 40 years, passed away after a brief illness on August 18, 2026, at the age of 70.

Robert was born on February 17, 1956, in Highland Park, Michigan, to Donald E. and Elizabeth J. Mackinder. He was raised in Shelby Township and, following high school, proudly followed in his parents’ footsteps by serving in the United States Air Force. Robert was very proud to be an American.

After his military service, Robert began a long career, most recently with HM Environmental Services Inc., where he remained until his retirement approximately two years ago.

Robert was a man who took great pride in his home and was naturally mechanically inclined and handy. In his free time, he enjoyed golfing, playing Keno, and spending time working around his house and yard. He had a deep appreciation for World War II history and loved watching movies of all kinds, from classic westerns to romantic comedies. He also had a special love for dogs and animals in general.

Most of all, Robert treasured being surrounded by his family and friends. He loved people and will be remembered as a proud father and grandfather who cherished the time he spent with those he loved.

Robert is survived by his companion, Michelle Carrier; his children, Erin (Steve Chappell, Jr.) Goss and Emily (Eric) Waldowski; his grandchildren, Norah and Samuel Goss; and his siblings, Marilyn (Dean Smith) Nieman, Susan (Greg) Kopitz, Kathleen (John) Hannon, and Stephen (Mary) Mackinder. He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Elizabeth Mackinder, and his brother-in-law, Darryl “Mo” Nieman.

An open house celebration of Robert’s life will be held from 2:00 to 5:00 PM on Sunday, October 11, 2026, at Bello Woods Golf Course, 23650 23 Mile Road, Macomb, MI 48042.
