Obituary

Sam Ruimy

July 25, 2026 Côte-Saint-Luc, Quebec Paperman & Fils

With great sadness, we announce the peaceful passing on July 25, 2026, of Sam Ruimy at age 97. He was the devoted husband of Georgette Ruimy for 73 years.

In addition to Georgette, he leaves behind his children Joel (Marsha), Josiane (Peter) and Michele, grandchildren Aaron (Shelley), Jonah, Louise (André), Jane (Charles), and great-grandchildren Miriam and Joseph.

As a young man, Sam dreamed of becoming a draftsman but the Vichy government of occupied Morocco put an end to that dream when it banned Jews from higher education. In 1957, Sam and his young family moved to Montreal, where they were to grow deep roots in their community for the next seven decades.

Improbably for a man with his marginal skating skills, Sam coached the hockey team at the Steinberg’s warehouse where he worked. He retired more than 30 years ago, living with Georgette in their beloved TMR until necessity forced them to move last year to the Maimonides Geriatric Centre in Côte Saint-Luc. There, they received kind and attentive care from staff. The family thanks the people of Maimonides as well as Rabbi Moshe Krasnanski.
