Thomas Clyde “Tom” Engert, 72, of Raymore, Missouri, passed away peacefully on August 1, 2026.

Tom was born on June 24, 1954, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Clyde and Leona (Leonard) Engert, who preceded him in death.

Tom graduated from Webster University and O’Hara High School, Kansas City, Missouri, where he went to school with his wife Candy. They reconnected at the O’Hara High School 5th year reunion!

Tom dedicated his life to serving others.

He began his law enforcement career in 1974 as a dispatcher and reserve officer with the Kansas City Police Department before joining the Grandview Police Department in 1978. During his distinguished career, Sergeant Engert spent many years as a D.A.R.E. officer, positively influencing countless young people and earning the respect of the community that he faithfully served.

Following his retirement from the Grandview Police Department in 2000, Tom continued his career in the Investigations Unit at Sprint for 16 years.

Even after retiring again, he remained committed to helping others as an Instructor at Metropolitan Community College-Blue River’s Public Safety Institute, sharing his knowledge and experience with future public safety professionals.

Serving others wasn’t simply Tom’s career-it was the way he lived his life. He served on the Raymore Planning and Zoning Commission, The Cass County Emergency Services Board, and was elected to the Raymore City Council in 2023. Whether in uniform, the classroom, or public office, Tom believed in giving back to his community.

Away from his work, Tom embraced life with the same enthusiasm that made him so well loved. He was an eternal optimist with an infectious sense of humor and a gift for making everyone feel comfortable. He never met a stranger, and conversations with Tom often became lasting friendships. He treasured his annual fishing trips to Canada, loved his sports cars, and was a devoted Kansas City sports fan. Whether sharing a story or showing someone how to care for a car, Tom found joy in sharing the things he loved and making others feel welcome.

Above all, Tom loved his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Candy (Felling) Engert; his daughter, Alex Engert (Corey); his sisters, Peggy Shults (Gary), Joan Gilmore (Greg), and Tricia Roberts; his brother, Bob Engert (Jo); and many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends.

Tom will be remembered for his integrity, his lifelong commitment to serving others, his gift for telling a great story, and his remarkable ability to make everyone he met feel comfortable. To Tom, strangers were simply friends he hadn’t met yet. His legacy lives on in the community he served, the lives he touched, and the family and friends who were blessed to know and love him.

A Celebration of Life will be held on August 22, 2026, from 1pm to 3pm at Centerview- Raymore Community Event Space, 100 Municipal Circle, Raymore, MO 64083, 816-331-0433.
