Vladimir Idelevich Vaynberg, born in 1951 in Edineț, Moldova, passed away surrounded by family and memories of a life that took him across much of the former Soviet Union and eventually to the United States.
Born into a Russian-Jewish family, he later moved to Tomsk, where he studied engineering at the University of Tomsk and met his future wife, Tatyana Vaynberg. After completing his degree, he eventually moved to Dushanbe, Tajikistan, where he worked for the Institute of Chemistry.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the family eventually left Tajikistan for the USA as the civil war and his health made remaining there increasingly difficult.
Vladimir was a natural storyteller. He loved conversation and had an extraordinary memory for people, events and stories from the past. He could remember details from decades earlier and was always ready to share them. He especially loved telling stories about his childhood and his family, returning to favourite memories again and again.
He was sociable and he enjoyed showing what he knew. He could be funny, entertaining and, at times, humorously incapable of recognising when his audience had heard quite enough. But conversation mattered to him, and he was happier when he had someone to talk to.
He had a particular aptitude for understanding how things worked. If a television or VCR stopped working, he was the person people called. He would take the machine apart, work out what had gone wrong, and put it back together again. He repaired electronics for people both in his home and in theirs, earning a steady side income in the process. There was also an unexpected reward: the family gained access to bootleg American films that would otherwise have been almost impossible to see.
He leaves behind a life spanning Moldova, Siberia and Central Asia, and the USA, a talent for fixing things that others had no idea what to do with, and countless stories that he was always ready to tell.
Vladimir is survived by his two children, his brother, and his two grandchildren.
May he rest in peace.
A Graveside Service will take place at Oaklawn Cemetery and Cremation Gardens, 4801 San Jose Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32207, US, on August 19, 2026, at 10:00 am.
