Barbara Jo Shaw of Austin, Texas passed away on Wednesday, April 29 at the age of 83. She was born on May 29, 1942, in Fort Worth, Texas where she grew up in a loving family environment in the Como Lake area of Fort Worth, Texas.
She graduated from Como High School in 1960 and later went on to receive a BA of Education degree from Huston-Tillotson College in Austin, Texas. While at Huston-Tillotson, she met and married Walter Shaw, Jr. of Austin, Texas in 1962. They remained faithfully married for 64 years and had three children from this union (Karen Michelle Sheppard of Missouri City, TX, Eric Michael Shaw of Frisco, TX, and John Elvin Shaw, of Houston, TX.)
Barbara worked as an elementary school teacher for 24 years at the Texas State School for the Blind and Deaf. She retired from there in 1998.
Barbara was baptized in 1975 and was actively involved in her church at the Church of Christ at Eastside in Austin, Texas. She remained an active and faithful member at the church until 2025 when her health required oversight intervention from her children. She moved to Missouri City and continued to worship at Missouri City Church of Christ with her daughter, Karen.
She was preceded in death by her parents Laura and Walter Hall of Fort Worth, Texas, and by her sister Ruth Elvin Beal of Fort Worth, Texas.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Walter Shaw, Jr.
Barbara was a devoted member of the Phi Delta Kappa Sorority, Inc. (Delta Beta Chapter), where she faithfully served as both Basileus and Dean of Pledges.
The family would like to thank Fairbanks Assisted Living and Memory Care (FCAL) of Houston for their outstanding care of our mother while under their care in their facility. The family would give special recognition to David Gober and wife, Kate. Others of equal importance include Hospice nurse, Cheryl Jones and nurse assistants Adrienne, Natalia, Pat, and T ’Anna.
Family and friends are invited to attend the homegoing service at the Church of Christ at Eastside, 5701 E Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, Austin, Texas 78721 on May 9th, 2026, at 11:00 AM.
Visitation and Wake services with the family will be held at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home at 14501 North IH-35, Pflugerville, Texas 78660 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
Interment to follow the funeral homegoing service on Saturday May 9th, at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Cemetery at 14501 North IH-35, Pflugerville, Texas 78660 at 2:00 PM.
