Ella Mae Larson

Ella Mae Larson was born on September 28, 1928, in Killdeer, North Dakota, to Joe and Edyth Dardis. She was the fifth of seven children, growing up in the Badlands of North Dakota.

During the war effort, her family moved to the West Coast, where Ella worked alongside her parents as a certified welder in the Kaiser Shipyards. She received numerous awards for her welding skills and was a true “Rosie the Riveter.”

Ella Mae met her husband, Earl Larson, after he returned home from World War II. They were married on April 18, 1948, at Assumption Catholic Church in St. Johns. Together, they made their home in St. Johns, surrounded by family and friends, and raised their four children: Dennis, Martin, Kenneth, and Janet. She also leaves behind a legacy of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mae took great pride in her work as a union meat wrapper, beginning at Del Monte Meats and later continuing at Tradewell Stores.

The couple purchased a marina on the Multnomah Channel, later acquiring another upriver and combining the two into Larson’s Moorage. It became a successful business and a place where countless family memories and friendships were formed and cherished.

After retiring, with their children taking over the marina business, Ella Mae and Earl enjoyed their home in Sunriver, Oregon, and spent time traveling in their motorhome.

Following Earl’s passing, Mae traveled the world with her sister, Una-Jean, and other family members, embracing history, culture, and new experiences. She especially enjoyed golfing and wine tasting.

Ella Mae Larson lived a wonderful, full life—one rich with love, hard work, adventure, and joy. A life very well lived.
