Martin N McCayna

August 31, 2026 Dunham, Quebec Dignity Memorial

Martin N. McCayna, 69, of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away peacefully on August 31, 2026. Born in Romford, Essex, United Kingdom, Martin built a life filled with love, laughter, hard work, and devotion to the people who meant the most to him.

Martin had a football career spanning decades, clubs, and levels. He started out as a teenager in the junior squad at West Ham, went on to play professionally for Southend, and won a record number of trophies at Leytonstone. He also played against international teams with The Middlesex Wanderers. He captained every club he played for and earned a reputation as a no-nonsense but reliable defender. His on-field reputation reflected his off-field reputation—he was loved and respected in both.

As well as being a footballer, Martin was also an avid golfer, with the sport taking up many of his Sundays and the occasional weekend away. He always enjoyed playing in the local Ryder Cup with the lads and watching golf on television in the evenings to relax.

Martin was a contractor who truly loved what he did. He took great pride in his work and in everything he did, but the best part was the relationships he formed along the way. The people he worked with became lifelong friends. He was a hardworking, selfless, and devoted man who was loved by so many.

Martin had a wonderful sense of humor and could make people laugh with his funny personality and genuine spirit. He enjoyed traveling to new places and, most of all, spending time with his family and grandchildren. His greatest joy was being surrounded by the people he loved.

Martin was a loving husband to his wife, Christine McCayna, and a devoted father to his sons, Martin McCayna and Daniel McCayna and daughter-in-law, Meagan McCayna. He was a proud grandfather to his grandsons, John Michael McCayna and George McCayna, who brought so much happiness and love into his life.

Martin was preceded in death by his parents, John Martin McCayna and Irene Maud Sewell McCayna, and his sisters, Susanne McCayna Redgrave and Sally McCayna James.

He is survived by his wife, Christine; his sons, Martin and Daniel (Meagan); his grandsons, John Michael and George; and his siblings, James McCayna, John McCayna, Joanne McCayna Payton, and Marianne McCayna Barnett, along with many extended family members and dear friends who will forever cherish his memory.

Martin leaves behind a lifetime of memories, laughter, love, and the many lives he touched along the way. His absence will be deeply felt, but his love and the memories he created with his family will live on forever.

He was a husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend, and a truly selfless man. Above all, Martin loved deeply and gave generously, never asking for anything in return.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, September, 19, 2026 from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm with a service beginning at 2:00 pm in the chapel at Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham. A reception to follow in the chapel.
