Robert Gerard Wienholt Sr

Robert Gerard Wienholt Sr., 73, known to all as Bob, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 14, 2026. Bob was the devoted husband of the late Teresa Carol Wienholt, with whom he shared 47 years of marriage. He was a loving and devoted father to Robert Gerard Wienholt Jr. (Leah), Laura Teresa Brookshire (Brandon), Thomas Lawrence Wienholt (Erica), Joel Andrew Wienholt (Erica), and Kassandra Jean Carpenter (Christopher). He was a cherished grandfather to Benjamin, Madison, Jeremy, Andrew, Austin, Nicholas, Eli, Andi, Naomi, Emery, Maeve, and Sutton. Following Teresa’s passing, Bob was fortunate to find love and companionship again with Maureen Hagopian, whom he married in 2024 and who survives him.

Bob was born on April 21, 1953, in Baltimore, Maryland, one of fourteen children. From a young age, he was a caring and responsible older brother who helped care for his younger siblings. At just 14, he began what would become his lifelong career in the movie theater business, working for JF Theaters, which operated numerous theaters throughout downtown Baltimore. He was hired by his lifelong friend, Ira Miller, beginning a friendship and professional partnership that would span decades.

After graduating from Mount Saint Joseph High School in 1971, Bob became a manager at the New Theater, where he met Teresa, a cashier. They quickly fell in love and were married on June 22, 1974. Together, Bob and Teresa built a beautiful life centered around their family and their shared passion for the movie theater business. They raised five children while working tirelessly to build and manage theaters throughout Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. Later, he and his wife partnered with his sons to build Horizon Cinemas, and even after Teresa's passing he continued to partner to build theaters. He completed his last project earlier this year in Florida.

Bob took great pride in every theater he helped create and was especially skilled at the hands-on work of installing seats, drapes, and screens. Always looking for new ways to share his love of movies, he hosted “Movie Talk” on WCBM 680 AM, where he talked about movies, the theater business, and trivia. Through his leadership as a business owner, Bob touched countless lives, and he took great pride in teaching all five of his children the value of hard work as they worked alongside their parents in the family theaters.

Bob’s greatest passions were his family and baseball. He loved taking his children to Orioles games at Memorial Stadium and Camden Yards and participated in several Orioles Fantasy Camps over the years. He coached baseball at the John Carroll School for several years and organized a Sunday Harford County league with a special rule allowing fathers and sons to play together. Some of his happiest memories were made on the baseball field with his sons and sons-in-law, competing together in numerous JSB tournaments and continuing to play as a family through the last year of his life.

Bob also loved old movies, particularly those starring his favorite actor, Errol Flynn. He enjoyed the music of Gordon Lightfoot, the Bee Gees, and Jeff Lynne’s ELO, and was especially fond of his Chevrolet Astro—the only car he ever owned. True to his appreciation for classic films, he often said, “They don’t make movies like they used to.”

Above all, Bob will be remembered for his generosity. He was always willing to help family, friends, employees, and anyone else who needed him. Throughout his life, he supported countless people through difficult times, regardless of who they were or what they needed. His favorite words were, “If you need anything, call me,” and he truly meant them.
