Gary E. Hogan was a native of Brownwood, Texas. He was the oldest of three sons born to Reverend James B. Hogan and Frankie Brown Hogan, born April 4, 1959. He graduated from Brownwood High School. He attended Temple College and Howard Payne University while studying criminal justice. After college, Gary joined the United States Army and worked for Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company (known as 3M). As a US Army veteran and private citizen, he was afforded the opportunity to travel to 16 countries and 48 states. Gary’s love for communication overflowed into his hobby of working with telecommunications, particularly with CB/HAM radios, transmitting/receiving antennas, and cell towers. As an expert, he was sought after by telecommunication engineers across the country as a freelancer. He also loved chatting it up on the phone and had a unique gift for identifying dialects and cultural names. Being fluent in the German language further reflected his love of history and being able to communicate in one of the countries he enjoyed most while living abroad.
Gary was a lover of all music, particularly country music, and God! In addition to playing the acoustic guitar, Gary was able to distinguish instruments when listening to music. When listening to music, he truly listened to the lyrics and appreciated the messages with his whole heart. Gospel music was near and dear to him. For many years, Gary created personalized cassette tapes, Christian tracts, and business connect cards to share the word of God and sent them across the world witnessing about the goodness of our Savior. He also used ink pens to share the word of God. One of his favorite scriptures to put on pens was:
2 Corinthians 12:9 – And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. - NKJV
Gary’s strength and resilience to face the life journey that God uniquely placed him on was fueled by his faith and love of humor. Anyone who knew Gary was familiar with his gregarious and infectious laugh, as well as his heart to help others on their life journey with common sense wisdom, compassion and truth. With a heart driven by helping and encouraging people from all walks of life, he believed in randomly blessing others with unexpected acts of kindness. He partnered and supported many organizations and ministries that all focused on helping others, including serving in advocacy roles for better health care and representation for underserved communities and people. Gary was a straight shooter and never too proud to humble himself and apologize when needed. More than anything, he was committed to wanting everyone to know God for themselves.
His legacy of love, integrity and generosity lives on through his committed wife, Jenell Paul-Hogan, of 20 years; cherished as daughter, Catedra (Marcus) White of Elgin, Texas, (daughter of Claudia Redmond); granddaughter, Kourtney Baldwin of Austin, Texas; great grandchildren; Damani Rodgers and Dior Rodgers of Austin, Texas; sister, Wynona (Morris) Williams of Brady, Texas; sister-in-law, Rosa Hogan of Brownwood, Texas; brother, Harold Hogan of Brownwood, Texas; brother-in-law, Joel (Cindy) Paul; nieces LaGina (Danny) Gaines, Sherri Williams, and Valerie Williams all of San Antonio, Texas; niece Jeina (Morsello) Hooker of Brownwood, Texas; niece Mashari Hogan of Austin, Texas; nephew Curtis Williams of San Antonio, Texas; great nieces Demayha Hooker, Aleah Gaines, and Samantha Williams; great nephews Morsello V. Hooker, Samuel Williams, and Jahmir Hooker; along with a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and an extended collective family in love (Parker and Paul) that spans across 20 states.
Gary was preceded in death by his loving parents Reverend and Mrs. Hogan, his dear brother Marvin Hogan and an angel baby he shared with Jenell.
