Adela Maestas

25 septembre 2026 Dignity Memorial

Adela Maestas, age 77, passed away peacefully at home on the evening of September 25th after a courageous battle with lung cancer. She was surrounded by loved ones, including her devoted son and daughter.

Adela was born in Muleshoe, Texas, to Jose and Rosita Maestas, and was one of fourteen children. In 1961, she moved from Muleshoe to Delano, California, where she spent the majority of her life.

In the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s, Adela worked the fields alongside her family and became deeply involved in the farm labor movement. She marched with the United Farm Workers union, standing up for improved working conditions and fair treatment for farmworkers. Even during long days in the fields, Adela was known for never leaving home without her makeup on and her hair and nails done — a reflection of her pride, spirit, and personal style.

In 1970, Adela married Guillermo Cisneros, and together they welcomed two children, Elizabeth and William. After their divorce, she met her husband, Tony Gonzalez, while working at a mini mart. Adela and Tony shared many years together until his passing in 2009, and she never remarried.

Adela later became a business owner as a farm labor contractor and proudly retired from that work. She was a pillar of her community — always upbeat, always glowing, and able to light up any room simply by walking into it. She never met a stranger; wherever she went, she was bound to run into someone she knew and share a warm conversation.

Generous to her core, Adela never hesitated to help friends, family, or anyone in need. She also loved a good adventure, especially road trips to Las Vegas or the local casinos. Lady Luck seemed to favor her, especially when she played her beloved Buffalo slot machines.

Adela is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Schwark; her son, William Cisneros; five grandchildren; three great grandchildren; three sisters; and three brothers. Her presence, kindness, and incredible spirit enriched the lives of all who knew her.

We are truly blessed to have had the gift of her love and her light, and she will be deeply missed.
