Evelyn Barry Solomon, of Pearl, passed away September 25, 2026, two months prior to her 100th birthday.
A native of Brookhaven, Mississippi, Evelyn was raised there and proudly graduated from Brookhaven High School. She enjoyed a long career in retail, working for many years at Kennington’s Department Store in Jackson, and later at TG&Y.
Evelyn’s faith was strong and a central part of her life. She was a longtime and devoted member of St. Jude Catholic Church in Pearl and before that at St. Therese Catholic Church in Jackson.
Evelyn found great joy in doing for others and was always ready to lend a helping hand. Her caring nature was evident in everything she did, especially in the way she welcomed others into her home. No visitor ever left hungry, as Evelyn took great pleasure in preparing food for everyone who walked through her door. Her generosity, warmth, and genuine love for others will be remembered by all who knew her.
Evelyn's marriage to her husband of 67 years, Elmer, was an old fashioned love story. Having met in California while both were visiting family their courtship primarily consisted of love letters. Eventually, Elmer made his way to Brookhaven to marry Evelyn, the true “love of his life.”
Their marriage was a unique and beautiful partnership. A simple look or gentle touch between them often spoke volumes about the deep affection they shared. Throughout their 67 years together, they continued the tradition of leaving one another little notes filled with love and encouragement. One of the family’s most cherished memories was Evelyn’s signature knock on the shared wall between their bedroom and kitchen—a familiar signal to Elmer that it was time to start her coffee and toast. It was a small, everyday ritual that perfectly reflected the love and understanding they shared.
As a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Evelyn took immense pride in her family and devoted her life to their well-being. She was always looking out for those she loved, fiercely protective and determined to provide them with a clean, safe, and loving home. Her family was her greatest joy, and caring for them was one of the ways she expressed her deep and abiding love.
In addition to her husband, Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, Wray Barry and Jewel (Hutson) Blades; great-grandson, Corey Hendon; and sister, Mary Smith.
She is survived by daughters, Connie Aley and husband Jeff, and Lisa Solomon; grandchildren, Susan Hendon and fiancée Mark Aromola, Anna Solomon, Alli Solomon, and Chuck Hendon; great-granddaughter, Carly Hendon; and brother, Robert Barry.
Visitation will be held from 5:00pm until 7:00pm, Thursday, October 1, 2026, at Baldwin-Lee Funeral Home in Pearl. Rosary Services will follow at 7:00pm. Funeral Mass Services will be at 12:00pm, Friday, October 2, 2026, at St. Jude Catholic Church in Pearl with interment in Floral Hills Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the church.
