Gerardo de la Garza

Gerardo de la Garza, 72, was born on September 4, 1953, in McAllen, Texas, and passed away peacefully on August 12, 2026, in McAllen, surrounded by his beloved family.

A longtime resident of Pharr, Texas, Gerardo—affectionately known as Gerry—will be remembered with profound respect and enduring affection by all who had the privilege of knowing him. In 1980, he married the love of his life, Rosa Linda, and together they built a beautiful family blessed with four sons. He was a devoted and steadfast husband, a loving father and grandfather, and a cherished father-in-law, son, brother, and friend.

Gerardo was a proud graduate of McAllen High School, Class of 1971. He continued his education at Pan American University in Edinburg, Texas, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Education in 1976.

He devoted his professional life to the service of others through a distinguished career in education. Gerardo began his teaching career with PSJA ISD at PSJA High School before becoming part of the faculty at the newly opened PSJA North High School. Deeply committed to the development of young people and to the betterment of his community, he chartered a Key Club International chapter that went on to become one of the most active clubs in the Texas-Oklahoma District.

Gerardo believed passionately in empowering young people to build character, cultivate leadership, and dedicate themselves to meaningful service. His influence extended far beyond the classroom, as he encouraged countless students to recognize their potential and use their talents to make a difference in the lives of others. For his exceptional dedication, he was a multiple-time recipient of the Gene Y. Brock Memorial Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award for the Texas-Oklahoma District.

He later continued his career with La Joya ISD, bringing his total commitment to education to 27 years of dedicated service as a professional educator. He approached each day with the quiet dignity of a hardworking man, giving generously of his time, knowledge, and energy while expecting little in return.

Above all, Gerardo’s greatest devotion was to his family. He carried himself with a profound sense of responsibility toward the people he loved, and there was seemingly no limit to the lengths he would go to provide support, encouragement, and care. As a father and grandfather, he was a constant source of strength and reassurance. His kindness was never for recognition; it was simply part of who he was—expressed through thoughtful gestures, patient listening, a helping hand, and a compassionate willingness to make room for others.

Gerardo also found tremendous joy in the art of cooking. He spent countless hours honing his craft in the kitchen and at the grill, taking pride in preparing meals that brought people together. Among his greatest pleasures was sharing his signature smoked brisket at family gatherings and community events. Through his cooking, as in so many other aspects of his life, he expressed his generosity and his love for those around him.

His wisdom was often offered quietly, shaped by a lifetime of experience and shared with sincerity and care. Even in difficult moments, Gerardo possessed a warm, understated humor that could ease tension, lift spirits, and remind those around him that laughter and hope can endure even in the midst of life’s burdens.

Gerardo leaves behind more than memories; he leaves an example. His life was defined by devotion to family, commitment to service, generosity toward others, and an unwavering willingness to give of himself. His influence will continue through the students he mentored, the community he served, the family he cherished, and the many lives he touched along the way. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
