Joannie Marie Heisterberg, 86, passed away peacefully on September 26, 2026, surrounded by her three loving daughters. Born in Rockford, Illinois, to Frank and Lola (Cave) Schmit, Joannie’s greatest joy in life was spending time with her family.
In her younger years, she dedicated many years to serving as a Girl Scout leader, where she developed a lifelong love of fishing and the outdoors. She was always ready for a spirited game of cards, a craft project, or an adventure to a new destination. Her warmth, sense of humor, and adventurous spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Joannie is survived by her daughters, Sindi (Jeff) Kunkle, Teri (Joe) King, and Jaci (Dan) Hoven; her grandchildren, Chris (Samantha) Kunkle, Andrew Kunkle, and Hannah King (Austin Loney); her great-grandchildren, Henry and Molly Kunkle; and her siblings, Patricia Miley, Sue Spielman, John (Karla) Schmit, Nancy (Ross) Ellison, and Joe (Lisa) Schmit, and several nieces and nephews who loved her dearly.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Heisterberg; her parents, Frank and Lola (Cave) Schmit; and her sister, Cathy Nason.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Joannie’s memory to Gentiva Hospice, 1701 E Market St., Jeffersonville, IN 47130.
