Julieta Rivas Acevedo

24 septembre 2026 Dignity Memorial

Julieta Rivas Acevedo went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on September 24, 2026, at the age of 93. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend whose life was marked by her faith, devotion to family, and commitment to serving others.

Julie was born on March 17, 1933, in the San Juan area of what would eventually become El Paso, Texas. She was raised on the south side of El Paso and spent part of her early years in an area known as the “Seis Infiernos.” Her early experiences helped shape the strength of character, determination, and deep love for family that would define her throughout her life.

She attended Aoy Elementary School before continuing her education at Bowie High School. Julie was always proud to call herself a Bowie Bear, and her connection to Bowie remained a cherished part of her identity throughout her life.

As a young teenager, Julie met Manuel “Manny” Acevedo Jr. She was drawn to his strength, gentle spirit, and impeccable manners. Their relationship blossomed, and on May 16, 1954, Julie and Manny were united in marriage. Together, they built a life and family that spanned 68 years, until Manny’s passing in 2022.

Julie and Manny were lifelong members of Our Lady of Guadalupe, where they remained active in church activities and functions. Their faith was an important foundation of their lives, and Julie continued to treasure her relationship with her church and her Lord throughout her years.

Above all, Julie devoted herself wholeheartedly to her family. She dedicated her life to raising her three daughters and two sons, making their home and well-being her highest priorities. She gave her children her time, love, guidance, and unwavering support, creating a foundation of care and devotion that would extend through generations. Her love for family did not end with her children. Julie took great joy in the lives of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, welcoming them into her home and making herself available whenever they needed her.

Julie’s dedication to children and education also extended into her community. In recognition of her devoted service to the faculty and staff of Houston School and Austin High School, she received a Lifetime Membership in the National Parent Teacher Association (PTA). She also actively supported the Austin High School Athletic Boosters and the Austin Band Booster Club.

Julie and Manny became well known for their generosity toward the Austin High School band, providing an abundance of snacks for band members as they traveled on Friday nights during the fall. Their support reflected the same spirit of generosity and care that Julie demonstrated throughout her life.

Julie also served as a leader with the Girl Scouts of America, giving her time and energy to encourage, guide, and inspire young girls. Through her involvement with the PTA, school booster organizations, and Girl Scouts, she left a lasting mark on the lives of children and young people in her community.

Julie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Manuel “Manny” Acevedo Jr.; her son, Manuel Acevedo III; her parents, Evaristo Rivas and Maria Dolores Rivas; her brothers, Guillermo Rivas and Ruben Rivas; and her sisters, Evangelina Rivas and Ernestina Ramirez.

She is survived by her brother, Jorge Luis Rivas of El Paso; her daughters, Patricia Aguirre of El Paso; Sylvia Brilliant (Patrick) of Azle, Texas; Loretta Smith (Clinton) of Ganado, Arizona and her son, David Acevedo (Pamela) of Abilene, Texas. In addition, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind extended family members and dear friends whose lives were enriched by her love, generosity, and kindness.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 15th, 2026, from 5:00 - 9:00 pm, with a rosary at 7:00 pm, at Funeraria del Angel Central at 3839 Montana Ave., El Paso, Texas 79903.
