Ruth Ostrander Van Etten

Ruth Ostrander Van Etten, 72, passed away peacefully on September 26, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.

Ruth was born in Louisiana to the late Charles Ostrander and Betty Irene Casey Ostrander of Cedartown, Georgia. She made Panama City Beach her home for more than 50 years. Throughout her life, she held a deep appreciation for family, nature, and the simple, meaningful moments that make life full.

Ruth is survived by her husband of more than 40 years, John Van Etten; her son, Hines Richardson IV, and his wife, Melody Richardson; her daughter, Mary Hale, and her husband, Marcus Hale; her son, John Paul Van Etten; her sister, Betty Ostrander; and her brother, Charles Ostrander, and his wife, Thu Ostrander. She also leaves behind extended family members, dear friends, and many others whose lives were touched by her warmth, generosity, and caring spirit.

A graduate of Gulf Coast State College, Ruth worked in accounting and retail over the years. She was known for her reliability, kindness, and wonderful sense of humor. Her greatest devotion, however, was always to her children. She poured her heart into their lives, offering guidance, encouragement, and unwavering love.

Ruth also gave generously of her time to her community. She volunteered for many years with the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts of America, helping shape young lives with patience, encouragement, and care. Her love of the outdoors led her to volunteer hundreds of hours at St. Andrews State Park, where she supported environmental and conservation projects and helped care for the natural spaces she cherished.

Those who knew Ruth will remember her devotion to her family, her laughter, and the gentle way she made others feel seen, supported, and valued. She found meaning in caring for the people she loved and in giving back to the community around her.

Ruth's presence was a source of love and comfort to those fortunate enough to know her. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her family and friends.
