Sheldon (Shelly) Smolokoff was born on September 1st, 1933, in Brooklyn NY, and passed away peacefully, on May 10th, 2026, in Tinton Falls, NJ.
Shelly is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Toby, his sons Jack, Gary, and Ron, their wives Mary Beth (Tinton Falls), Terry Porcelli (girlfriend, Long Branch), and Maureen (Oceanport) and grandchildren David, Jamen, Jade, Gemma, Jake, Cole, Dean and Conley and great grandchildren Reid and Ruby, as well as his cousins, nieces (Diane, Glenna and Abby and nephews Jeffrey, Neal and Jack).
Shelly was predeceased by his sister Eve, Brother-in-laws Jack, and Fred, and his loving parents Dave and Ruth.
Growing up Shelly was an excellent student, as he placed 3rd in his high school class and was then accepted to Brown University, in Providence RI. It was there where he met the love of his life, Toby in his senior year, just in time for his senior formal! They got married one year later. He knew a good thing when he saw it. Shelly’s family moved from Somerville, NJ to Glen Cove, NY then eventually, Shelly with his wife and children, settled in Huntington, NY.
As a youngster Shelly caddied and was a counselor at camp. After graduation he worked at Filene’s basement, then became an insurance adjuster in Hartford, CT. and spent 2 years in the army at Fort Dix. Shelly knew deep down, his true love was education. He then attended Hofstra University to earn his master’s degree and eventually became a guidance counselor at Huntington High School. In this role he helped so many young students to grow and realize their potential in life. Helping people was so important to him, and he was one of the best at it.
Hobbie’s over the years included basketball, golf, running and singing in various choirs including the Huntington Men’s Chorus, temple choir and even Seabrook’s Senior Choir.
As a father of 3 scholarship athletes, Shelly never missed a game. He was happy to keep score or do the clock at games as he could multitask and earn some extra money while he got to watch his sons play! Later in life he so enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports and perform on stage with beaming pride.
It was important for Shelly to give back to the community, and he did so as a long-term member of the Lion’s club and then later in life he volunteered at senior facilities, again to help others.
