Abel Gutierrez Jr., 68, of Corpus Christi, Texas, passed away peacefully on August 27, 2026. He was born in Sinton, Texas, on June 28, 1958, to Abel C. Gutierrez and Cecilia Cuellar.

Abel was a proud graduate of W.B. Ray High School. He built a career in telecommunications, working for Verizon and Frontier, where he dedicated many years of his life to his work and to the people he met along the way.

On November 23, 2024, Abel married the love of his life, Thelma Gutierrez, in Corpus Christi. Together, they shared a life filled with family, laughter, friendship, and countless cherished memories.

Abel was a proud member of the Texas Association of Sports Officials (TASO). He had a true passion for sports and was happiest when he was on the golf course, playing pool, umpiring, coaching, or simply enjoying a game with friends and family. He was a devoted fan of the Texas Rangers and Dallas Cowboys and loved watching and talking about sports throughout the seasons.

More than anything, Abel loved his family. He treasured spending time with those closest to him, celebrating birthdays and special occasions, sharing meals and conversations, and gathering together during the holidays. He especially looked forward to the family's post-Thanksgiving dinner and cherished every opportunity to be surrounded by the people he loved.

Abel had a gift for connecting with everyone he met. His easygoing nature, quick humor, warm personality, and generous spirit made him unforgettable to so many. His laughter could bring people together, and his friendship left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

He was preceded in death by his father, Abel C. Gutierrez, and his mother, Cecilia Cuellar.

Abel is survived by his beloved wife, Thelma Gutierrez, and his children and grandchildren, who were a cherished part of his life.

His son, Marcus Gutierrez, and grandson, Michael (Nikki) Gutierrez, along with great-grandson Maddock; granddaughter Nadia Gutierrez and great-grandsons Alex and Anthony; and granddaughter Sofia Gutierrez. His daughter, Monica (Dominik) Gutierrez, and granddaughters Bre-Yanna, Yalena, and Gyanna. He is also survived by his stepchildren, Anthony (Sabrina) Gutierrez, and step-grandchildren Alex and Gabriella; and Adrianna (Arturo Amaro) Gutierrez, and step-grandchild Aziel. His sisters, Sylvia (Domingo) Rangel and Annabel Martinez, and his brother, Rudy Gutierrez.

He leaves behind a family who loved him dearly and countless friends whose lives were touched by his humor, generosity, kindness, and friendship.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital South Corpus Christi for their care, compassion, and support.

Though Abel is no longer with us, his laughter, his stories, his love of sports, and the countless memories he created with his family and friends will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
