Betty Jo "BJ" Plunkett, 73, of Oak Island, North Carolina, passed away on May 19, 2026.
BJ was born in Arkansas and made her home on the coast of North Carolina for the past 20-plus years, where she became a beloved fixture of the Oak Island community.
She is survived by her brother Thomas Kessler, three children, from her first marriage, and their families: Eric Plunkett and his wife Ilia, and their sons Nolan and Chase; Brent Plunkett and his wife Jessica, and their children Ali and Calvin; and Heather Fronczek and her husband Ken, and their daughter Eleanor.
She was preceded in death by S.R. "Buddy" Rudd Jr. who was her companion for almost 20 years until his passing in 2021.
She is also survived by Buddy’s three daughters and their families. Ellen Holland and her husband Danny and their son Michael; Karen Brake and her husband George, and their son Zachary and daughter Hannah; Brooke Rudd and her daughters Bailey, Emma and son Luke.
A private memorial will be held for family and friends at a later date.
BJ's family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love, support, and condolences during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to your local animal shelter in her memory.
