Cardell Shorts, 73, formerly of New Sarpy, Louisiana, passed away on July 17, 2026, in Denton, Texas, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in January 1953, Cardell was the son of Mary Shorts and Isiah Douglas and the stepson of Ellis Shorts. He was a devoted husband to Janet Shorts, whom he married on June 5, 1997, and a loving father to Dwayne Shorts-Muhammad, Detrick Cardell Shorts, and Dionandrea Francis Shorts.
He was also a loving stepfather to Russell Lewis and the late Maurice Douglas. Cardell's legacy continues through his eight grandchildren and surviving siblings, Albert Shorts and Louetta Douglas.
Cardell was a community advocate and proudly helped integrate Destrehan High School for Black students, an experience that shaped his lifelong belief in the importance and transformative power of education.
He will be remembered for his courage, love of family, commitment to his community, and the legacy he leaves for generations to come.
Services honoring Cardell's life will be held at H.C. Alexander Funeral Home.
