Charles Waynes Haynes, Sr., was born in Houston, Texas, on June 11, 1933, to George and Bertha Haynes, who instilled in him the values of hard work, humility, and quiet determination. He grew up in a home where family mattered, where you did things the right way, and where you learned to take pride in every task you put your hands to. After graduating from Austin High School, he served his country in the Army, and when he returned home, he continued his education at the University of Houston—always striving to better himself and build a strong future.
On October 3, 1953, Charles married the love of his life, Lora Maxine. Their marriage, which lasted an extraordinary 70 years, was a beautiful example of devotion and partnership. Together they built a life filled with family, laughter, and countless memories that will continue to live on in the hearts of everyone who knew them.
Charles dedicated his professional life to mechanical engineering, beginning at Baash Ross Oil Tools and continuing through each transition as the company became Joy Manufacturing, Cooper Industries, Varco, and National Oilwell Varco. He never sought recognition, but his work earned it anyway. During his time with Joy Manufacturing, he received five patents from the United States Patent Office—each one a testament to his creativity, intelligence, and deep understanding of his craft. His innovations, awarded between 1978 and 1985, included the Tong Locking Mechanism, the Rotary Tong with Interchangeable Jaws, the Kelly and Kelly Drive Bushing, the Dual Camming Action Jaw Assembly and Power Tong, and a Slip Mechanism. These achievements became part of his professional legacy, reflecting a lifetime of dedication and ingenuity. He retired from Varco and National Oilwell Varco in 1991.
After retiring, Charles embraced a quieter, more peaceful rhythm of life. He purchased a place on the Bolivar Peninsula, a spot that quickly became his sanctuary. He loved sitting outside, watching the ships pass by, each one a reminder of the wide world moving steadily along. Fishing—whether offshore or right there in the surf—brought him joy, calm, and a sense of connection to the water he loved. He also enjoyed playing golf with his buddies, they had a weekly tee time.
He also found great happiness in woodworking. With patience and skill, he crafted beautiful spinning carousels for his family. Each one was made with care and love, a reflection of the same hands that had spent a lifetime building, fixing, and creating. Those carousels weren’t just gifts—they were pieces of him, shared with the people he cherished most.
Charles is survived by his sister, Brenda, and her husband Paul Egner; his children, Charles Haynes Jr. and his wife Priscilla, Terry Haynes and his wife Sandi, and his daughter Susie Becvar; his grandchildren, Tara and Eric Jiminez, Charlie Haynes III and his girlfriend Samantha, Michael and Tracy Haynes, Morgan and John Carter, Dalton Becvar, and Stephen and his wife Julie Becvar; and his great grandchildren Austin and Emily Jiminez, Jayme and McKenzie Carter, and Ethan Haynes. Each of them carries a part of him—his strength, his kindness, his quiet wisdom, and the love he poured into his family.
Charles is preceded in death by his parents, George and Bertha Haynes; his daughter, Lora Denise Haynes; and his beloved wife, Lora Maxine Haynes. Though they have gone before him, their spirits remain woven into the story of his life.
Serving as pallbearers are Charles Haynes Jr., Charles Haynes III, Terry Haynes, Michael Haynes, Dalton Becvar, and Eric Jiminez—each one honored to help carry him home.
Charles lived a long and beautiful life—one built on love, hard work, devotion, and quiet strength. He touched every person he met with kindness, steadiness, and a genuine heart. His legacy lives on not only in the innovations he created and the work he accomplished, but in the family he cherished, the memories he made, and the love he gave so freely.
Though he has left this earthly home, the impact of his life remains—carried forward in his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and in all who were blessed to know him. The lessons he taught, the stories he shared, and the gentle way he moved through the world will continue to guide those he loved.
Today, we honor a remarkable man. We celebrate his life, his laughter, his craftsmanship, his dedication, and the deep love he held for his family. And as we say goodbye, we take comfort in knowing he is reunited with those who went before him, resting in peace and surrounded by everlasting love.
May his memory be a blessing, and may the legacy he leaves behind continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who knew him.
